Face-to-Face Class on Saturday, 18 April 09

I learned during this class that I was very behind with my postings on my personal blog. I was very appreciative of the gentle reminder. I also appreciate Dr. Robin for understanding the challenges of being a medical educator and appreciate his leadership for the MEDCEN program.

For me, alot of the challenges has been finding new ways to teach and deliver instruction. I'm convince that what I learn in the technology courses will greatly enhance instruction and will lead to changes in curriculum development anesthesia training.

We discussed the projects for the final class assignments. I will need to communicate with the other MEDCEN folks on ideas for the final assignment.

Learning How to Use Photostory 3

I learned how to use Photostory 3 to create digital storytelling projects duirng one of the Saturday face-to-face class sessions. Prior to this class, I had no idea as to how to go about creating a digital storytelling project. I did not own a digital camera until I took Dr. Robin's Advanced Digital Photography course almost a year ago. Well, it wasn't mine. I borrowed it from my daughter. She also helped me with learning how to use her digital camera. I previously learned how to edit digital photos using Photoshop. I also learned how to use Audacity to capture digital voice recordings towards the end of that class.
With those prior knowledge, learning how to use Photostory 3 to create digital storytelling projects was much less intimidating. I think I can do this. It is funny that it has taken me this long to learn this technology. My daughter created a digital storytelling project when she was in 7th grade. That was three years ago. I'm just now trying to catch up with all of these new technologies. The information for all of these new technologies are out there. Finding the time to absorb all of these information is another matter.

Highlight of the Merlot Award

Dr. Robin was awarded with the Merlot Classsic 2009 Award for his Educational Uses of Digital Storytelling website. I did a little bit of research on this award and and posted a comment below.
I posted a comment a while back (more than one week ago) but did not see it on this assignment section when I reviewed it again today. I am re-posting this comment again. Hopefully, it will not get lost this time.
Congratulations! The Editorial Board Award is the highest award honoring exemplary models for Faculty Development category. I think this award should be placed somewhere at the top of the EUDOS website, make it visible, dignified but not too flashy. You have a diverse population of students in your class. I think you should mention this diverse student population taking your classes, to include the medical educators and how medical educators can apply digital storytelling to medical education. From looking that the Merlot website, it looks like that you have to contribute of educational material to the website first. The educational material goes through a peer review process and is then selected for the Merlot Classics Award or the Editorial Board Award.

This is odd. I also noted one of my other posting did not make on the blog response page today. When I reviewed this comment, I also noticed that the first response to this blog did not make it onto the response page either. I'm pretty it is a user issue, since I'm still very much a novice with the use of the these technologies. I'm catching on quickly. Thanks to Dr. Robin and all of his courses. I have learned to write my responses on a Word document, then copy and paste it onto the response page of the blog. I've lost a few response comments in the past and have came up with a safer way not to loose these responses.

Resources for Digital Storytelling Telling

One of the weekly projects was to find other resources which can be incorporated into the digital storytelling project for this class. We all found different sites on blogs, wikis, podcast which included digital storytelling project. I focused on the blog section and found some of the sites below which I thought was interesting and could be included as a link in our digital storytelling class project. Comments on assignment is below.
Dr. Robin,The Podcast page under Web 2.0 is quite unfriendly to my eyes. It was difficult for me to see red letters against a purple background. Do you have plans to change the color design on this page?
The SITE blog spot would be a nice addition to the Web 2.0 section. It is currently not included in the section of our Digital Storytelling Website. This blog spot is maintained by the Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education. It contains useful ideas on how to incorporate digital storytelling for educational uses. This site would be a very nice addition under the Blogs section of Web 2.0.
Matthew Needleman created the above blog which discusses the uses of digital storytelling, podcast and other video projects in the classroom. This blog spot is quite comprehensive. It has links to other blog sites. It’s focus is also educational uses of videos and digital storytelling in the classroom.
Dan Meyer is the creator of the above blog site. The website contains several podcasts. The first video clip on “Projective Motion” is educational. I find the other two video clips, “World Series of Poker” and “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Cigotie?” not so educational. When I tried access other contents on this blog spot, these contents could not be accessed. However, the video clips are functional.

Midterm Project

Tatiana and I collaborated on the midterm project. The current digital storytelling website has a Software section but not Hardware section. Tatiana and I worked the Hardware portion for this project, which included the uses of the following equipments to produce a digital storytelling project: computer, digital camera, scanner, video camcorder, microphone, speaker and voice recorder.
I initiated the project and e-mailed it to Tatiana. Tatiana added her portion in and sent it back to me for further editing. It took me a while to try to find out how to save the file Tatiana sent back to me. I gave up the first time and asked Dr. Robin for help. After trial and error, I found out that the document sent was on viewer format. The viewer format had to be closed in order to save the document on the desktop for editing. I'm learning something new every day. It sure wasn't fun learning when I was strapped for time.
After some more editing, we finally turned in our project to Dr. Robin. I hope it is useful enough to be placed on the website. I made the recommendation to put the Hardware section along with the Software section.

Final Project Posting

I thought I previously responded to this assignment. I don't see my comment placed on this page. Well, here it is. The MEDCEN students are going to work together to improve the Health/Medical section under the Examples tab for this project. I'm interested in producing an instructional educational video either for the anesthessia residents or for the pre-operative evaluation nurses in my clinic.

When I reviewed some of the response blogs, I found out that my response for this class assignment was not posted. It may be that I forgot to respond to this blog. I remember discussing it in class with the other MEDCEN students. As previously discussed, the MEDCEN students wanted to improve the Health/Medical Section. I've search for good educational medical and health care related digital storytelling projects to incorporate into our website. There really is not much out there. I think digital storytelling projects can be very useful tool for instructional projects, such as peripheral intravenous line placements and airway exams. I can use these projects to instruct nurses and medical students.
I'm very behind with the postings on my personal blog. Dr. Robin says we can use our previous postings on the class blog page and put it on our personal blog page for self reflective learning. I think that is a great idea. It is nice to be able to attend class this weekend and catch up, since I haven't had a free weekend since January 2009.
The first day of class was an introduction to this course, CUIN 6397. Dr. Robin showed us the updated Educational Uses of Digital Storytelling website located at this address: http://courses.coe.uh.edu/brobin/6397/index.html. Dr. Robin introduced this digital storytelling project which he previously created and updated. There was still a lot of work left to be done. Our whole class was placed in charge of reviewing the website, identify areas that needed improvement and then work on those areas that needed to be improved.
The MEDCEN students volunteered to work on the Health/Medical section under the Examples tab on this website. Right now, it can definitely need a facelift. One of the first assignments was to write a personal introduction and put it on the class blog page. I did not place my picture on the class blog page until today. I had to really look to find a snapshot of myself. My daughter found my old picture on the Harris County Medical Association website and sent it to me. I finally upload this snapshot on the blog page today. Below is the narrative from my personal introduction.
"Hi! I'm Jennifer Nguyen. I currently hold a Clinical Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Baylor College of Medicine. I consider myself very fortunate to be able to pursue another degree at this stage of my career. I will hopefully graduate with a Master's of Education-Curriculum & Instruction this summer. Dr. Robin's leadership for this program in the medical center has allowed many clinicians like myself the opportunity to pursue this degree and make this opportunity much more attainable for many physician educators. I'm looking forward to another great semester."
